Teeth Whitening Works on Many Stains

If you’ve tried drugstore whitening, there’s a good chance you were disappointed in the results. But that’s no reason to dismiss professional whitening. The products we use contain more active ingredients than those sold in stores, so they provide brighter results. We offer two options, both of which are used in the convenience of your own home. If you opt for custom-made whitening trays, you’ll find it especially easy to get complete coverage of your teeth.

There are situations, however, where whitening won’t remove all of the discoloration. For instance, if your tooth enamel is thinning your teeth may appear to have a yellow or gray tinge. This results from the dentin inside your tooth showing. For thin enamel or other situations where whitening won’t be effective, we’ll recommend covering the discoloration with bonding, veneers, or crowns.

Bonding Is a Fast & Affordable Option to Fix a Stained Smile

A bonding treatment is one way to cover stains. Dr. Eccles will carefully apply tooth-colored resin (the same material used for fillings) to your tooth before hardening it with a special light. Unlike crowns or veneers, the procedure can typically be completed in one appointment. Since we won’t remove any enamel prior to treatment, it is also reversible. In addition to stains, bonding can be used to hide other minor imperfections such as chips.

It is less expensive than veneers or crowns. It won’t last as long, however. The resin also isn’t as stain resistant or sturdy as porcelain or other materials used for those restorations. So you’ll need to be more careful about smoking, drinking coffee, and other habits that can affect the appearance of bonded teeth.

Beautify Your Teeth With Veneers or Crowns

For a more lasting transformation, you’ll want to consider veneers or crowns. Both of them can conceal more kinds of flaws than bonding. They can modify everything about your tooth’s appearance, including size and shape. Veneers are even sometimes called “instant orthodontics” because of their ability to cover issues such as gaps between teeth and crooked teeth.

Unlike bonding, veneers and crowns are custom made for you by technicians at an outside dental lab. Because of this, it typically requires two to three visits to complete your smile transformation. Dr. Eccles will need to remove a bit of enamel from your teeth to prepare them for treatment, so these restorations aren’t reversible.

With proper care, veneers and crowns can last well over a decade. Your tooth’s condition may determine whether it’s best to use a veneer or a crown. While veneers cover only the front surface of teeth, crowns cover your entire tooth. So crowns are a great choice for teeth that aren’t in good shape.
