If you’re making resolutions to improve your health in 2024, go ahead and make smile health part of your commitment. The good news is, many habits that are good for your body are great for your smile too.

For example, eating nutritious foods improves both your oral health and overall health. Some foods can help stop cavities and other dental problems. They can also help remove surface staining from your teeth, giving you a more attractive smile

Ask us about tooth-friendly foods at your next exam. In the meantime, check out this short video that highlights the benefits of several foods:

  • Apples – This tasty fruit contains malic acid, a substance that promotes saliva production. That’s important because saliva helps keep bacteria and other harmful substances off your teeth. In addition, crunching into an apple’s firm flesh helps scrub away food debris – almost like a natural “toothbrush.”
  • Cheese – You know that fluoride helps strengthen your tooth enamel, making it more resistant to cavities. So does eating certain foods – including cheese. It’s packed with calcium, protein, and phosphorus – all of which give you stronger teeth.
  • Broccoli – Like apples, broccoli’s texture can work like a “toothbrush” if you eat it raw. It also has plenty of iron, which helps prevent dental problems.
  • Strawberries – These berries, like apples, contain malic acid. They also have antioxidants. Consuming antioxidants lessens the accumulation of plaque on your teeth and can help prevent gum disease.
